Begin by rinsing the basmati rice under cold water to remove excess starch. This step ensures that the rice cooks evenly and results in fluffy grains. Set the rinsed rice aside to drain.
Heat the olive oil in a large pan over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until it becomes translucent and fragrant.
Once the onion has softened, add cumin and turmeric to the pan. Stir the spices into the onion, allowing their aromas to permeate the oil, creating a flavorful base for the rice pilaf.
Add the rinsed and drained basmati rice to the pan, stirring gently to coat the grains with the seasoned oil. Toast the rice for 1-2 minutes, allowing it to absorb the flavors.
Pour in the water, ensuring it covers the rice by about an inch. Season with salt according to your taste preferences.
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low, cover the pan, and let it simmer gently for about 15-20 minutes or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
Serve with grilled meats, vegetables and perhaps even some fresh yogurt based dip like Tzatziki. Enjoy!
