Where did this classic dressing get its start?
Caesar salad has an Italian history that makes it a classic Mediterranean dish. The salad was first created in Tijuana, Mexico, in the 1920s by an Italian man named Caesar Cardini, who owned a restaurant there.
Legend has it that he invented the dish on July 4th, 1924, because he was running low on ingredients and had to improvise with what he had in his kitchen.
The original Caesar salad was made with romaine lettuce, croutons, parmesan cheese, and a dressing made from olive oil, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and raw egg. Over time, the recipe has been adapted and modified, and today there are many variations of Caesar salad.
You can customize your dressing to fit your dietary needs.
Anchovies are a traditional ingredient in Caesar salad, but they can be replaced with other ingredients without sacrificing flavor. In my recipe, I use Worcestershire sauce, which actually has anchovies listed as one of its ingredients.
If you are Vegan, you can use a vegan Worcestershire sauce that doesn’t contain anchovies, vegan mayonnaise and even vegan parmesan cheese!
If you’re looking to take your Caesar salad up a notch, try a loaded Caesar salad recipe. A loaded Caesar salad is essentially a Caesar salad with extra toppings and as a result, can elevate the salad.
Some popular toppings for a loaded Caesar salad include chicken, bacon, avocado, tomatoes, cucumbers, capers, and hard-boiled eggs. To make a loaded Caesar salad, simply add your desired toppings to a basic Caesar salad recipe.
Tips and tricks!
- Use fresh ingredients: Fresh garlic, lemon juice, and parmesan cheese will give your dressing a bright, tangy flavor.
- Add salt and pepper to taste: Salt and pepper will enhance the flavors of the other ingredients and help to balance the dressing.
- Customize the recipe to your liking: If you like extra garlic like my family does, add more garlic to the recipe. Pick up this garlic press to save you a ton of time! If you prefer a creamier dressing, add more mayonnaise or try plain Greek yogurt or sour cream.
- Meal Prep: Make a double or triple batch and store in the fridge for up to a week! This will save you so much time when you’d rather not be in the kitchen on a busy weeknight. Or try making them in salad jars at the beginning of the week for an easy grab and go lunch that stays fresh for up to 5 days in the refrigerator! You can find out how here.
Whether you prefer a traditional Caesar salad or a loaded Caesar salad, there are many variations of this dish to choose from. By using high-quality ingredients and following a few simple tips, you can make the best Caesar salad dressing and customize it to your liking.
